Hop 3: The Grim Bun

Heyo! Welcome back to our weekly update! Not intentionally weekly intervals; I just work 15 hours a day and happen to finish each update in roughly a week.

Anyways! This third update Hop 3: The Grim Bun is all about DEATH! Pretty grim I know, but for good reason at least! Games need consequence, platformers need deaths to create challenge through consequence. So let's get into it!

The first thing I added was the actual health script! I wrote a really modular script that I can use for other objects and other projects which works nicely! You can take damage and get healed now! At least in code, taking damage is all you actually can do in-game. With this you can also die from falling out of bounds! I added a new little segment to the test level for you to see this!

Following the health addition I had to add a way to view your health. I had the urge to make the health indicator blend into the game and be something lore-friendly. But, I just couldn't think of anything right away and decided it would also be too out of the way for something as important as health. And Bun Bun Land is marketed as a SIMPLE PLATFORMER so the traditional heart icons that display health in the corner of the screen seemed fitting.

I may decide to add portraits or a mini player visual up there, or maybe even add damage visuals to the player; but not right now.

With all this talk of health and dying; what happens after death? For testing I had it just restart the level. But for the actual release you'll get this fancy little death screen! It takes inspiration from Kingdom Hearts, and by inspiration I mean I might've just ripped it off and haven't added anything original to it yet; but it looks cool!

You also get the options to retry the level or return to the HUB world which is currently the title screen.

Finally, like I said before; I added some small level polish to the game! I added sounds for hopping, getting hurt, dying, jumping, landing; and a secret sound for a later ability! The land sound is also a smart system! It reads tags of the ground you're walking on to set the right sound for landing! Right now there's only grass but I'll be working on another test level later to show this off more.

I hope everyone enjoys this little update! Each update adds just enough to make a nice snack sized devlog and update release. Which is 100% the idea! Big updates in my opinion shouldn't happen until after launch with content updates; and minor updates should still be released alongside them!

Next week I'm going to be making the Game Jolt page for Bun Bun Land! As well as pay for the Steam page! Steam has a 30 day review process so hopefully by the 30 day mark it will be accepted and I can post up a nice page!
