ALPHA 2 - It's a Rogue World Out There


Welcome back to the after life! It's ben a while, 26 days to be exact! This jam version was rough considering it was made in a VERY short time and I'm not a skill 100 musician and artist or even game dev in general. So it was rough, and the ALPHA 1 update was a quick quality of life foundation to make the game more enjoyable and less punishing. I thought this was important to get players to get more into it and get some players who left due to the hardcore punishment of dying to try it again; which I believe was worth it.
But today  I'm back here to announce the BRAND NEW UPDATE....

                          

                                     

The HUB Station
Before we had the title screen,


Now we have the HUB station!


What's the difference?! Besides all the new visual changes such as:
- Lighting
- Procedural city background
- New street lamp sprite
- New rain cover sprite
- Rain particles

The evolution of this area is pretty drastic and I hope it shows the vision of this project more. 

Soul Ledger
The soul ledger is a new object you can interact with at the new HUB station. This ledger holds your stats for runs, characters you'll be able to unlock in the future! It's in a meh state right now, there's only one stat, only one character; and the art is very much placeholder. BUT! I'm talking with an artist to give this ledger a very nice look in the future.


If there's any stats you'd like to see added then let me know!
The settings page will also likely be in this ledger in the future.

Train Generator
A big thing I didn't get to put into the jam or ALPHA 1 versions was the rogue train; procedural generation! They were only a linear and static train to run against. But, every human mental process happens in very different ways and in different flows. Not every person processes grief the same. And this is a game about going through the grief process of dying.

So! The train now generates itself! This is completely procedural! I could add cars wherever, extend the in-betweens however much I want. I'm really happy with how smooth it is.

Each main car category (Start, Denial, Isolation, Anger, Sorrow; and Acceptance) has 5 base variations currently. They also have minor variation code in them though! Some objects may behave differently, some might not be there; the minor variations are subtle but effective. More variations will come in time with each and every update.


Run Modifiers
Since the update was focused on the rogue-lite elements of the game I wanted to originally have in. I knew I had to have run modifiers. Currently there's only a death rule modifier where you can choose the original one life, 3 lives; and a god mode for those who don't like dying. 
I'll be adding more modifiers as they're requested and/or I think of more quality ones.


I made an in-between scene to give you this nice little scene that I really think turned out well! You have a nice chalkboard to select your run settings and then start the run when done. This is keyboard, mouse; and controller ready!
